About

A Potter’s Light emerged out of a love for working with clay and the desire to share it with others. The yearning to throw clay at a potter’s wheel tugged at me most of my life.  It started out as something I always wanted to try to learn but was never quite able to fit it into my crazy life schedule. College, work, married life with young children, tight budgets, career demands… you get the drift. Working to merge and meet all of the calendar commitments left no time for this pipeline yearning to take a lump of clay and form it into a beautiful and unique functional vessel that could be used in day to day life. The idea behind it nevertheless was dreamy.

Fast forward through some life stuff and I was gifted, by my daughter and husband, with an opportunity to take my first class, an introduction to throwing at the wheel for beginners.  Yep, that was definitely me, sign me up!  And that’s where my love story with clay began.

As I mastered centering the clay, I discovered being at the wheel very cathartic. I’d even go so far as to say it can be downright therapeutic. I found myself enjoying having to be present, clearing my head of any other thoughts, to stay focused on what I’m doing. (That was a challenge!) Nothing else was allowed to ebb into my space. I found that working with the clay, holding and manipulating it,  commands that I am fully present in the moment, releasing all of life’s demands and distractions. It keeps me grounded and it has become soothing and healing to be in that space.

And, who knew that once I sat down to the wheel it would lead me to something more?

More than a skill learned. More than a hobby. Who knew that working with clay and throwing it to the wheel would become an expression where light would shine out of darkness for me?  Or that, through my journey, I would awaken to find the courage and strength to reflect hope through faith, gentleness, kindness, and love or that it would overflow to others through the pieces I make, the people I teach, and all of you that are brought into my life? (WINK)

I invite you to come and experience the grounding beauty that can be found in simple vessels made of clay.

A Potter’s Light provides you, and me, the opportunity to do something for a cause larger than ourselves. How can that be you ask? The proceeds from selected pieces at A Potter’s Light artisan pottery are donated to the those in need through non-profit charities, helping to support and light the way to hope.

I enjoy creating functional pieces that can be utilized in day to day life. Each one of my pieces is unique, in its own right, with no two items being identical. I invite you to check in, sign up for news releases, and/or visit my store to see what pieces are currently available for sale and/or donation.

The Meaning Behind the Name: A Potter’s Light

A Potter’s Light… each of the words were carefully selected. I wanted to make sure that all of this, the idea, the business, the reason wasn’t about me and my interests, and that everything that overflows would show how great God is. With that said, below provides a brief explanation of each word that was chosen.

A =  marked out, defined boundaries; this is the purpose of the business – it’s not about me

Potter’s = God is the master potter. This is about His purpose.

Light = His light is the light that is inside each of us, radiating outward.

Did you notice that the name of the business, as a whole, directs you to God? That wasn’t by accident. A Potter’s Light gives tribute to the master potter, God. A Potter’s Light asks me to be humble, give all the attention to Him, and reflect His light; knowing that it is His light that provides hope.

The Lord came to me and said “can I not do to you as the potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so you are in my hand.” Jeremiah 18:5 (NIV)

The conception of my stamp, marked on each piece of pottery whenever possible, came to me as I prayed about what I wanted others to experience as they held a clay vessel in their hand. A simple reminder that each of us is the clay vessel, uniquely created from the master potter. The stamp is an image of a clay vessel with a large flame and a smaller flame with the words Faith, Hope, Love. The clay vessel is each of us. The large flame is His light. The smaller flame is your light. A gift that we each have been offered and asked to reflect to others.

My hope is that the light that shines from each of us, will reflect out for the whole world to see through good intentions and actions. It will help others to get a glimpse of God’s presence and faith in something better. Reflecting it outward for all to see and igniting the light of others.  For it is through faith, hope, and unconditional love that each of us will be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
